Dear Reader,

 

The topic of halaal and harram is one that is in need of being discussed and dissected on its many facets in our daily lives.  Today, I wish to just discuss an introduction of halaal and harram from the Quraan and Sunnah.  The Prophet Muhammad  (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said regarding halaal and harram that: “There should be no harm or reciprocal harm.” [Maalik]  Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {O you who believe! Fear Allâh (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared. [Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always], and die not except in a state of Islâm (as Muslims) with complete submission to Allâh.}[Quran 3: 102].

 

Therefore, the criterion for prohibition is what Allaah has prohibited with a clear explicit or implicit text or revealed to His Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) to prohibit. This can only be known by studying the religious texts and their principles.  Allaah has not forbidden anything except that there is harm in it and did not ordain something except that there is good in it. However, even if the reason for a prohibition is the existence of the harm, the harm should not be taken as a criterion for that. It might be that there is much harm in a given matter but people are unaware of it. Contrarily, another matter could appear as if there are many benefits for the people in it but in reality its harm is greater than its benefit.

In another Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) mentions, ‘Verily Halaal is clear, and verily Haraam is clear. And between them there are certain doubtful matters many people are unaware of, therefore, who stays away from doubtful matters he has protected his Deen and honour. And who gets involved in doubtful matters, he would fall into Haraam.’ (Bukhari, Muslim)

 

We as mankind were created to fulfill a great mission that of: worshipping Allah.  And Allaah says: (interpretation of meaning) {O mankind! Fear your Lord and be dutiful to Him! Verily, the earthquake of the Hour (of Judgement) is a terrible thing} [Quran 22: 1].

The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) also recommended Taqwa in many Ahadith. He said: “Be careful and follow Allah’s Commands perseveringly, wherever you be whenever you commit a sin follow it up with a good act which wipes off the sin. Deal with people kindly and with good contact”.”

 

Ibn Rajab said: “The complete Taqwa is practicing obligations, avoiding prohibitions and doubts. Doing desirable acts and avoiding undesirable acts is also from Taqwa.”  Try to make yourself conscious of the enormity of the sin, as compared to the Greatness of the One you have disobeyed instead of looking at the smallness of your sin, insha Allaah.  May Allaah increase us all in our emaan, knowledge and taqwa.
